Backyard Dog Agility Kit

Agility is the team sport you play with a dog — and it starts in the backyard. A set of portable PVC jumps (adjustable height by dog size), a weave-pole set (the hardest skill, taught in pieces), a pause table, and a tunnel. Start low and slow, reward every step, and let the dog learn the obstacle before you add speed.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

What breed for agility?

Any breed can play for fun; the high-drive herding and sporting breeds (border collie, Aussie, sheltie, rat terrier) dominate the sport. What matters more than breed is the bond and the dog's desire to work with you. A mixed breed from the shelter is a fine partner.

How do I teach the weave poles?

In pieces — the weaves are the hardest obstacle. Start with the poles spaced wide (channel) or angled (weave-a-matic), lure the dog through, and slowly bring them to a straight line over weeks. Never force a dog into the poles; reward the path. A dog that learns the weaves wrong is very hard to retrain.

How high should the jumps be?

At or just below the dog's shoulder height for training — the jump height in competition is set by the dog's measurement, but in the backyard, keep it low to protect growing joints (no high jumping for dogs under 12-18 months) and aging joints. Low and correct beats high and injured.

Can I do agility just for fun?

Absolutely — most agility is backyard fun, not competition. It tires out a high-drive dog faster than any walk, builds the off-leash bond, and gives a working dog a job. If you catch the bug, a local club runs trials where you can test what you built. But the backyard is the reward.

5.0 / 5.0

Dog agility and my new-pet-prep share the build-the-bond gospel — cue not pull, and reward every step. A crate-trained dog is a sport-ready dog, and the backyard course tires out a high-drive pup faster than any walk, agreed.
