Common questions about this kit
Surf rod length?
10 to 12 feet for the beach — the length heaves a heavy sinker past the breaking waves into the deeper water where the fish cruise. A short rod cannot reach.
Corrosion-proof reel?
Yes — salt destroys gear. A sealed, corrosion-resistant spinning reel (and a freshwater rinse after every trip) is the difference between a reel that lasts and one that seizes.
Sand spike?
Yes — it holds the rod upright in the sand so you can set multiple lines and watch the tips for bites. A $20 piece of PVC that is essential surf gear.
Polarized sunglasses?
Yes — they cut the glare so you can read the water (cuts, sandbars, bait) and see following fish. And they protect your eyes from a flying hook.
User Reviews
Surf and pier kit and my bass kit share the polarized-and-read-the-water gospel — long rod to reach past the break, sealed reel for salt. Sand spike is essential, agreed.
