Modular Synth (Eurorack) Kit

The kit for a Eurorack modular system — the deep end of synthesis. A 9U case and power, a set of VCOs, VCFs, envelopes, and a sequencer, a couple of utility modules, and a small mixer/output. Modular is a vocabulary of voltages; the patch is the sentence.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

Eurorack — why?

It is the open standard for modular synthesis — hundreds of manufacturers, thousands of modules, all interoperable. You build exactly the synth you want (and none you do not), and every patch is a unique instrument. The deep, endless end of synthesis.

What modules first?

The voice and its shape — a VCO (oscillator/sound source), a VCF (filter/tone), a VCA (amplifier), an envelope generator (shape over time), and an LFO (movement). That is one complete synth voice; add a sequencer to play it and utilities to modulate it.

Cost — really?

Yes, really — modular is expensive (a starter system is $1500 to $3000; a mature one is $5000+). The cost per voice is far higher than a fixed-architecture synth. But the flexibility, the sound design, and the "build your own instrument" ethos are the draw; it is the hobby form of synthesis.

Patch cables?

Yes — every connection in a modular is a physical cable (3.5mm); a patch is a web of cables routing signals (audio, control voltage, gates) between modules. The patch IS the instrument; unpatch it and the instrument changes. Cables are an ongoing consumable, not a one-time buy.

User Reviews

5.0 / 5.0

Modular (Eurorack) kit and my studio share the patch-is-the-instrument gospel — the cost is real but the build-your-own-instrument ethos is the draw. The patch IS the instrument, agreed.
