Squash Beginner Kit

Squash is the most demanding cardio in a box — 40 minutes of sprint and chess. A beginner-friendly racket (slightly heavier head for stability), a pack of double-yellow-dot balls (the slow, pro-standard ball — yes, for beginners, it rewards control), non-marking gum-rubber court shoes, and protective eyewear (a ball at 100 mph blinds). Warm up the ball, warm up the body, and the rally is the reward.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

Why a double-yellow-dot ball for a beginner?

It is the slowest, which gives you more time between shots — counter-intuitively ideal for learning control. Faster balls (single dot, red) run away and reward sloppy power. Start with the double-yellow, the pro standard, and learn control over bashing.

Why non-marking gum-rubber shoes?

They leave no black marks on the wood court (every club requires them) and the gum sole grips the court for the explosive lunges squash demands. Running shoes mark the floor and slide. Dedicated court shoes are non-negotiable — you cannot play without them at any real club.

Do I really need eyewear?

Yes. The ball and the racket move at head height in an enclosed court; a direct hit to the eye blinds you, permanently. Polycarbonate squash goggles are cheap insurance and mandatory in many leagues and juniors. The one piece of "optional" gear that is not optional.

How is squash scored?

Point-a-rally (PAR) to 11 — you score a point whether you served or not, best of five. You must give the opponent a clear path to the ball ("let" or "stroke") or you lose the rally. Safety and honesty on the "let" calls are the etiquette; a dangerous player is an unwelcome one.

5.0 / 5.0

Squash and my tennis share the non-marking-shoes-and-a-racket gospel — the gum-sole court shoe is the hard-court shoe, and the double-yellow-dot-is-the-pro-ball is the extra-duty-is-the-hard-court-ball. Wrap the eyewear rule around the sunscreen rule, agreed.
