Bringing a camera on the reef turns a swim into a shoot. A compact underwater camera rated to 40 feet, a floating wrist strap (so it never sinks), a tethers-on mask mount for hands-free video, and a microfiber cloth for the lens port. Shoot shallow with the sun at your back, hold your breath to steady the shot, and rinse everything in fresh water after.

Common questions about this kit
Phone in a pouch or a dedicated camera?
A dedicated rugged camera (rated to 40 ft, no housing to flood) beats a phone in a pouch — better lens, real buttons, and waterproof by design. A phone pouch works for the surface but floods past a few feet and fogs inside.
Why a floating strap?
A camera that sinks is a camera you lose — the ocean is deep and dark. A floating wrist strap keeps the rig at the surface if you let go, and bright orange so a buddy can spot it. Non-negotiable around water.
How do I get clear shots?
Shoot shallow (light is best in the top 15 feet), sun at your back so it lights the subject, and hold your breath for the moment of capture to steady the frame. Get close — water kills color and contrast with distance.
Do I rinse the camera?
Always — salt water corrodes and fogs the seals. Rinse the whole rig in fresh water, work the buttons underwater to flush the crevices, and air-dry before opening any port. Skip the rinse and the next trip leaks.
