What is "the shot breaks as a surprise"?
You align the sights and squeeze the trigger so slowly and smoothly that the shot fires before you expect it — the exact moment is a surprise. If you anticipate the shot, you push (flinch) to counter the recoil and throw the bullet low. Surprise break is the master skill of pistol accuracy.
What are the four rules?
1) Treat every gun as loaded. 2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. 3) Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target. 4) Be sure of your target and what is beyond it. They are redundant on purpose — break one and the others keep you safe.
How often should I clean?
Every few hundred rounds, or any time it gets wet or dirty — a clean, lubricated pistol is reliable and accurate. Follow the manual; over-lubricating attracts dirt and under-lubricating causes wear. A clean gun is a reliable gun, and reliability is the point of a defensive tool.
