Advanced Locksmith Challenge Kit

For the lockpicker who can open a basic padlock in seconds, the challenge ladder goes up — security pins (spools, serrated), dimple and wafer locks, and a belt-ranking system of progressively harder locks. A progressive pinning kit (re-pin a lock with security pins to practice), a set of challenge padlocks at graded difficulty, and specialty picks. The belt ranks are the sport's score.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

What are security pins?

Pins shaped to fool a picker — spool pins (mushroom) set falsely and then "counter-rotate" the plug; serrated pins click at multiple false sets. They turn a 5-second open into a minute or more of careful feedback-reading. Real-world high-security locks use them; the sport ranks you on them.

What are the belt ranks?

The locksport community's skill ladder — white, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black — earned by opening graded locks at an event or on video. It is the sport's progression system, like martial-arts belts, and it gives the hobby a goal. Most pickers plateau around green/blue; black is years of practice.

Why a progressive pinning kit?

So you can re-pin a single training lock with any combination of standard and security pins — practice 2 pins, then 5, then add a spool, then two. It is the progressive-resistance training of locksport. One lock and a pinning kit replace a whole wall of challenge locks.

Rakes vs. single-pin picking?

Single-pin picking (SPP) lifts each pin deliberately — the purist's method and the only reliable one on security pins. Raking (a fast random motion) opens easy locks in seconds but fails on security pins. The sport ranks on SPP; raking is the party trick. Learn SPP first and forever.
