Four GPUs — when?

When one cannot fit your model or your batch size, and renting cloud time around the clock stops making sense. Distributed training across four GPUs roughly quadruples throughput for data-parallel work.

Threadripper + ECC?

For long multi-GPU runs, yes — ECC RAM prevents silent bit-flips that corrupt a days-long run, and Threadripper feeds four GPUs without bottlenecking.

Power and heat?

Plan for 2000 W plus peak and real heat output — a dedicated 20 A circuit and good case airflow are not optional. This is a small server, treat it like one.

NVMe over HDD for datasets?

Yes — training reads shuffled batches constantly; spinning rust cannot keep up and starves the GPUs. Fast NVMe is the dataset speed lever.
