Common questions about this kit
Indigo vat — how?
A living chemical environment — indigo must be reduced (de-oxygenated) in the vat before the dye is soluble and bonds to fiber. A pre-reduced indigo kit (Jacquard) simplifies the chemistry; the vat turns yellow-green under the surface (reduced) and the cloth turns blue as it oxidizes in the air. The magic of the blue appearing on contact with oxygen.
Shibori?
The Japanese art of shaped-resist dyeing — fold, clamp, stitch, or tie the cloth so the dye cannot reach some areas, creating patterns. Indigo + shibori is the classic combination; the white-resist patterns against the deep blue.
Why indigo is special?
Indigo does not dissolve in water; it must be reduced (vat chemistry), then the cloth is dipped and the indigo oxidizes on the fiber — turning from yellow-green to blue in the air. Each dip deepens the color; 3 to 10 dips build the deep, rich blue indigo is famous for. The oxidation is the magic.
Safety?
Yes — the vat uses lye (caustic) and a reducing agent; wear gloves and eye protection, ventilate the space, and never add water to lye (add lye to water). The chemistry is manageable but real; read the kit instructions before you start.
User Reviews
Indigo shibori kit and my garden share the oxidation-magic gospel — the yellow-green-to-blue on contact with air. The lye safety is real; read the kit instructions, agreed.
