Self-monitored is free and texts you; pro monitoring (about $20 a month) calls police or fire for you. For most owners, self-monitored plus loud sirens is enough.
Wired or battery cameras?
Wired outdoors, always. Battery cams die in winter and need a ladder every few months; wired runs forever and records 24/7 without burning through batteries.
Are smart locks safe?
A smart deadbolt is as strong as a good deadbolt; the smart part adds codes, schedules, and logs. Use a long random code and enable two-factor on the app account.
Why leak sensors?
A failed washing-machine hose floods a basement silently and costs thousands. A cheap sensor texts you the minute water hits it — the cheapest insurance in the kit.
