Chicken Health & Predator-Proof Kit

Once the flock is settled, the upgrades are safety and self-sufficiency. An automatic coop door (opens at dawn, locks at dusk, even when you are away), a poultry first-aid kit and dewormer, diatomaceous earth for mites, and a trail cam to see what visits at night. A healthy, secure flock is a low-maintenance flock.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

Is an automatic door worth it?

Yes — it opens at dawn and locks at dusk on a light sensor or timer, so the flock is safe even if you are out late or away for a weekend. It is the single biggest peace-of-mind upgrade. Get one that fails safe (locked) on power loss, and check it nightly for the first month.

How do I treat mites?

Diatomaceous earth (food grade) dusted in the dust-bath area and the coop cracks desiccates mites without chemicals. A heavy infestation needs a poultry-approved spray. Prevent it with a clean, dry coop and a dust-bath area the hens use themselves.

What is in a poultry first-aid kit?

Blu-Kote (for pecked wounds — it hides the red that triggers more pecking), electrolytes for heat stress, a dewormer, vet wrap, scissors, and a quarantine cage to isolate a sick or injured hen. Catch problems early — a chicken hides illness until it is advanced.

Why a trail cam?

To see what is actually visiting the coop at night — a raccoon, an opossum, a neighbor's dog. If you are losing birds or eggs, the cam tells you the culprit and the entry point. Knowledge is prevention; you predator-proof against what is actually there.
