Winter Hammock Kit

The kit for hammock camping in cold weather. A heavy underquilt (0F-rated), a closed-cell foam pad inside the hammock as a vapor barrier and backup, a winter tarp (doors closed), a top quilt rated for the season, and a hot-water bottle. Stay warm underneath; winter hammocking is about the bottom insulation.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

0F underquilt?

Yes — winter hammocking demands far more bottom insulation; a 0F underquilt (fully covering from shoulder to foot) is the minimum for freezing temps. Layer a pad inside for redundancy; cold spots mean a miserable night.

Closed-cell foam pad inside?

Yes — a thin CCF pad inside the hammock adds R-value and blocks the wind that penetrates the underquilt's seams. The pad + underquilt combo is the winter hammocker's insurance against the cold spot.

Winter tarp with doors?

Yes — a tarp with closable "doors" (the ends fold shut) blocks wind and traps a warmer air pocket around the hammock. In calm weather, open the doors; in wind, close them. The tarp is the winter shelter.

Hot-water bottle?

Yes — a Nalgene full of boiling water, placed at the feet and core, is the winter camper's heating pad. It adds hours of warmth to the quilt and is the cheapest, lightest heat source there is.

5.0 / 5.0

Winter hammock kit and my thru-hike kit share the hot-water-bottle-is-cheapest-heat gospel — a CCF pad inside for vapor barrier, and a door-tarp to trap the warmth. 0F quilts are the minimum, agreed.
