The kit for going light — a sub-10-pound base weight. A single-wall tarp-tent or tarp, a frameless pack, a quilt, a tiny stove, and the trimmed essentials. Every ounce justified on a spreadsheet; the miles are easier when the pack is light.

Common questions about this kit
Sub-10-pound base weight?
Yes — base weight (everything minus food, water, fuel) under 10 lb is the ultralight threshold, achieved by a tarp-tent, a quilt, and a frameless pack. The first 5 lb you drop are the most transformative.
Quilt over a bag?
Yes for UL — a quilt drops the compressed underside insulation (useless under you anyway) and saves ~10 oz. Paired with a good pad, it is as warm and far lighter; the modern UL standard.
Tarp-tent over a freestanding tent?
Yes for UL — a single-wall tarp-tent (or flat tarp) is half the weight of a double-wall freestander. The trade-off is condensation management and pitching skill; practice at home first.
Frameless pack?
Yes for UL — a frameless pack weighs ~1 lb vs 4+ for a framed one, but only carries comfortably under ~20 lb total. Going frameless requires the rest of the kit to be light; it is the top of the UL pyramid.
User Reviews
Ultralight kit and my backpacking kit share the first-5-lb-are-transformative gospel — a quilt and a tarp-tent over a bag and freestander. Frameless requires the whole kit to be light, agreed.
