Spearfishing & Line Kit

Spearfishing is freediving with a purpose — select the fish, take the shot, bring it up. A band-powered speargun (or polespear for shallow), a stringer to secure the catch, a dive knife (a tangle is an emergency), a float and flag so boats see you, and a wetsuit for warmth and protection. The most selective, sustainable fishing there is — you see the fish before you take it.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

Speargun or polespear?

A polespear (a long pole with a band and tip) for shallow water and small fish — cheap, simple, no moving parts. A band speargun for range and bigger fish — more power, more reach, more to learn. Start with a polespear in shallow water; graduate to a speargun when you hunt deeper or bigger.

Why a dive knife?

To cut yourself free of a tangle (fishing line, kelp, your own float line) that could hold you underwater — a life-safety tool. It also dispatches a speared fish humanely. A small, sharp, accessible knife on the calf or waist is standard. It is the tool you carry and hope to never need in an emergency.

Why a float and flag?

So boats see you. A spearfisher at the surface is nearly invisible to a fast boat. A bright float with a dive flag (the legal "diver down" marker) on a tether marks your position and gives you a place to rest and string fish. In any water with boat traffic, it is non-negotiable for not being run over.

Is spearfishing sustainable?

Exceptionally — it is the most selective fishing method. You see the fish, identify it, confirm it is legal and a species you want, and take only that one. No bycatch, no nets, no wasted fish. Know your regs, take only what you will eat, and it is the most ethical way to catch a fish.

Spearfishing and my bass fishing share the most-selective-method gospel — one breath, one fish, no bycatch. The pole-spear-before-the-gun is the spinning-before-the-baitcaster: start simple, agreed.

Spearfishing and my reef share the float-and-flag-so-boats-see-you gospel — and the dive knife for a tangle is the most-selected-fishing gospel: see the fish, take the shot. The sustainable take-one-fish is the right call, agreed.
