Pre-lit for convenience and reuse, real for the smell and tradition. A good pre-lit tree with warm lights pays for itself in three years and never drops needles.
Warm or cool lights?
Warm (2700K) for cozy — it flatters everything and reads as candlelight. Cool white reads sterile and hospital-y. Always warm for the holidays.
Garland over more lights?
Yes — real or quality faux evergreen garland on the banister and mantle does more for "Christmas" than another strand of lights. Greenery is the smell and the look.
When to take it down?
Whenever you like — but take the lights down before they get brittle in the cold. Label the light strands and coil them in shoebox reels; next-year you thanks present-you.
