Common questions about this kit
Defensible space — what and how far?
The 0 to 5 ft zone immediately around the house, kept clear of flammables (mulch, plants, debris), is what saves homes — embers ignite here, not the flame front. Rake, clean gutters, move firewood 30 ft away.
N95 masks for smoke?
Yes — wildfire smoke is fine particulate (PM2.5) that a cloth mask does not stop; an N95 does. Have a box ready for red-flag days and keep indoor air filtered with a HEPA or a DIY box-fan filter.
Fireproof document safe?
Yes — a rated safe (or a grab-bag of originals) for passports, deeds, insurance, and heirlooms. A fire moves fast; you cannot search for papers on the way out.
Evacuation plan?
Yes — one route and a backup (roads close), a rally point, a "go" trigger (a specific alert level, not a feeling), and a packed car parked nose-out. Rehearse it; the drill is what makes a 10-minute exit.
User Reviews
Wildfire prep kit and my earthquake kit share the go-bag-by-the-door gospel — defensible space is the bolt-the-furniture of fire country. Ember-rated vents are the cheap lifesaver, agreed.
