Indie Game Dev Setup

The solo dev desk. A capable workstation that builds and runs the engine, two monitors for code and game side by side, a pen tablet for art, a good keyboard and mouse, and a UPS so a crash never loses a build. Make the small game first.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

Build a PC or buy a Mac?

Match your engine. Unity and Godot run anywhere; Unreal likes a strong GPU and Windows. Pick the engine first, then the machine.

Two monitors — necessary?

For dev, yes — code on one, running game on the other. Iteration speed is everything, and alt-tabbing halves it.

Pen tablet for a non-artist?

Yes — even programmers make UI, particles, and level art. A cheap pen tablet beats a mouse for any visual work. Upgrade if it becomes your main tool.

A UPS for dev?

Yes — a power blip mid-build or with unsaved work is a bad day. A small UPS gives clean minutes to save and shut down. The cheapest insurance.

Indie game dev setup is my dev desk with a GPU and a tablet — two-monitors-and-a-UPS is the same religion I preach. Ship small first, agreed.
