Desert Day-Hike Kit

The kit for desert hiking where shade is zero and water is life. Twice the water you think, a wide hat and UPF clothing, electrolytes, suncreen and lip balm, a map (no signal), and a real first-aid kit. Start before dawn, off the trail by the heat of the day.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

How much water?

More than you think — at least 1 L per hour in heat, and double for a hard hike. Turn around at the half-water mark. Dehydration and heat illness come on fast and are dangerous in remote desert.

Start before dawn?

Yes — the desert is glorious at dawn and murderous at midday. Be off the exposed trail by late morning; the hottest hours are for shade, food, and rest, not hiking.

Electrolytes?

Yes — you sweat out salt as fast as water in the heat; plain water alone does not replace it. Electrolyte tabs or salty snacks prevent the cramps and fatigue of hyponatremia.

Paper map?

Yes — desert canyons kill GPS signal and a dead phone is a paperweight. A paper topo and the skill to read it is the reliable navigation; the phone is the convenience.

User Reviews

5.0 / 5.0

Desert day-hike and my day-hike essentials share the water-is-the-trip-plan gospel — twice what you think and turn around at half. Electrolytes not just water, and off-trail by midday, agreed.
