Grading & Slabbing Kit

The serious collector learns to grade — to read the wear and assign a condition that drives the value. A 10x loupe for the fine detail, cotton gloves and a velvet pad for safe handling, a grading reference, and archival Mylar flips for the coins worth protecting. The jump from "old" to "MS-63" is where the hobby becomes a discipline.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

What is a coin grade?

A shorthand for condition — from AG (About Good, nearly smooth) to MS (Mint State, uncirculated) on a 70-point scale. Two coins of the same date can differ in value by 100x based on grade. Learning to grade is learning the hobby.

Why a velvet pad?

A soft surface to lay and turn the coin without scratching it or risking a drop — grading requires viewing the coin from many angles under good light. A hard surface or a drop can ding the coin and drop its grade.

What is a flip?

A small PVC-free Mylar holder with two pockets — one for the coin, one for an ID card. It protects the coin while letting you handle and view it. Avoid old PVC flips; they break down and green-damage the coin over years.

Should I get coins slabbed?

For valuable coins, professional grading and encapsulation (a "slab") authenticates the coin and locks the grade — it protects value and makes the coin liquid. It is not worth it for common coins; the grading fee exceeds the value. Reserve it for the keys.
