Caving Beginner Kit

Caving is the descent into the dark — a passage no one has seen, a formation a thousand years old. A helmet-mounted primary LED headlamp, two backup lights (three sources minimum — a dark cave with a dead light is fatal), rugged knee pads and gloves, and layered synthetic clothes (caves are cold and wet; cotton kills). Never cave alone, and always file a trip plan with a return time.

Common questions about this kit

Why three lights?

A single dead light in a dark cave (and caves are absolutely, totally dark) is a stranded caver and a rescue. The rule is three independent light sources — a helmet primary and two backups, each with spare batteries. One fails, you have two; two fail, you have one and you exit. This is the one rule with zero exceptions.

Why a helmet-mounted primary?

Your head points where you look; the helmet light goes where you look, leaving your hands free for crawling, climbing, and bracing. A handheld light occupies a hand you need. The helmet light is the primary; the hands stay free for the caving.

Why synthetic layers, not cotton?

Caves are cold (often 50-55°F) and wet; cotton absorbs water and loses all insulation, accelerating hypothermia. Synthetic (or wool) layers insulate when wet and dry fast. Cavers wear rugged synthetics they do not mind destroying on the rock — the cave shreds clothes. Cotton kills in a cave.

Why file a return time?

A cave trip gone wrong is invisible from the surface — no signal, no view. The only way anyone knows to look for you is the trip plan you left with a reliable person: which cave, which entrance, who is with you, and a hard return time after which they call for a cave rescue. Without it, you are not missed until you do not show up for work.

5.0 / 5.0

Caving and my mountaineering share the three-lights-and-the-trip-plan gospel — the file-a-return-time is the register-at-the-trailhead, and the cotton-kills-in-a-cave is the cotton-kills-on-a-glacier. The dark is the cold is the dark, agreed.
