Indoor Aquaponics System Kit

The indoor aquaponics system is a furniture-grade loop — a tank and a grow bed (or a vertical tower) with grow lights, sized for a living room. A 40-gallon tank, a multi-level grow bed or tower, a full-spectrum LED for the plants, an auto-top-off and a backup pump (the loop dies if the pump dies), and a larger fish stock. The indoor system is food and beauty in the same room.

FAQ

Common questions about this kit

Why a backup pump?

The loop dies fast without flow — the fish suffocate (no oxygenated water) in hours, the plants dry (no water) in a day. A backup pump (on a separate circuit, or a battery air pump) keeps the loop alive through a pump failure or a power outage. The backup is the insurance that protects the fish (and the investment) when the primary fails. Aquaponics without a backup is a single point of failure.

Why an auto-top-off?

Water evaporates from the tank (the level drops, the concentration of waste rises); an auto-top-off (a float valve and a reservoir) replaces it, keeping the level and the chemistry stable. Without it, the aquaponics gardener tops off daily; with it, the system runs itself for a week. The auto-top-off is the automation that makes indoor aquaponics livable.

Why a grow light?

Indoors, the plants need light (the window is rarely enough); a full-spectrum LED, sized to the grow bed and on a timer (12-16 hours), is the sun replacement. Too little light and the plants stretch and pale; the right LED grows lettuce and herbs as well as a greenhouse. The light is the main yield driver in an indoor system; budget for it.

Food fish indoors?

Possible — tilapia (the warm-water standard) or catfish in a 40-gallon indoor system, grown out over months for the table. The indoor fish system needs a heater (for the warm-water food fish), a bigger biofilter (more fish = more waste), and the willingness to process a fish you raised. Most indoor systems stay ornamental (goldfish, tropicals) and grow plants; the food-fish path is the committed homestead.
